| WHAT: | West Virginia was admitted to the Union and became a member of the United States. | |
| WHERE: | Virginia/West Virginia | |
| WHEN: | June 20, 1863 | |
| WHY: | During the American Civil War, Virginia was divided over the decision to join the Confederate States. | |
| HOW: | As a result of this division, several counties separated from Virginia and West Virginia was born. |
