STS Highlights: February 2025
Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former Governor of California, currently hosts a daily podcast and produces an email newsletter. During the devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles, he took a moment to address the crisis. He acknowledged that while many people want to help in times of disaster, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—even when you’re not directly in the affected area. His simple yet powerful advice was to ask yourself, “Am I helping?” and take concrete steps to help rather than critique or place blame. Inspired by this mindset, I’m looking to February as a month dedicated to being helpful.
February is a month rich with meaningful observances, including Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, Random Acts of Kindness Month, and Canned Food Month. In keeping with these themes and with a spirit of service, let’s focus on:
- Celebrating diversity and inclusivity throughout Black History Month
- Promoting awareness of sexual harassment as we recognize Valentine’s Day
- Engaging in random acts of kindnes
- Donating canned goods and non-perishables to local food pantries
- Donating blood to revitalize the blood supply
- Supporting wildfire victims and first responders
Each month, our goal is to provide valuable public service announcements (PSAs) that support your career, department, or organization. As always, we are here to help you achieve your training objectives and continue advancing your professional growth.
A final note: Inclusion of charities and organizations in this newsletter are not endorsements. We encourage the research of any charity or organization before making a contribution to build confidence and comfort with the donation or support.
Be helpful,
Patrick

Helping Californians Impacted by the Los Angeles Fires
The media coverage of the recent wildfires shows absolutely catastrophic and devastating damage to the area. Victims of the fires, first responders, and communities need help. Before donating or volunteering, it’s important to research the organizations you’re interested in supporting to ensure that they are legitimate and use contributions effectively. The state of California put together a webpage with resources for those affected. It also includes ways to help.

Donating Blood is Incredibly Useful During Disasters
Natural disasters like wildfires can put significant stress on blood banks. These events often lead to increased medical needs that can require substantial amounts of blood for treatment. Hospitals and emergency responders can experience a sudden surge in patients, especially those with severe trauma, burns, or respiratory issues, all of which can lead to an increased demand for blood products. The most widespread blood collection organization globally is the American Red Cross, but smaller organizations are equally important during times of need.

Small Gestures Can Make a Big Difference
Random Acts of Kindness Month is celebrated every February and serves as an opportunity to encourage individuals to spread kindness through small, selfless actions. The goal of the month is to inspire a ripple effect of positivity by performing simple, unprompted acts of kindness for others. Even small gestures can make a big difference, brighten someone’s day, and make our communities feel a little warmer.
Stocking Your Local Food Pantry
Donating to food pantries provides vital support to people facing food insecurity. By contributing non-perishable items, you help ensure that those in need have access to nutritious meals, particularly during challenging times. Food pantry donations alleviate hunger and foster a sense of community and compassion, making a tangible difference. Feeding America is the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S, with a network of over 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. These food banks work together to distribute food to millions in need.
