Today was a welcomed short day. Only about 50 miles. Here is the map: Map – Perry to Des Moines, IA.
Favorite town to pass through has been Minburn. One of the residents referred to it as “the Paris of Iowa.” Great people
I’ve started asking other riders why they are doing RAGBRAI. Especially those who come back year after year. “It restores my faith in people.” These towns open there doors to thousands of people. They cook us food; they offer us water; they offer us stories and encouragement. This whole event is really about family.
I didn’t know what to expect when we signed up for the event. I intentionally stayed away from research. I didn’t want any preconceived notions. I am happy we are here; I am enjoying myself on the bike and with the communities we are interacting with.
Tomorrow is another 50 mile day but an elevation climb of 3000 feet. I will try to post again tomorrow.

Second Day. The ominous 83 mile day with an optional loop for a 100 plus mile day. We opted for the loop and road 111 miles over a 12 hour period, in heat, with hills. We brought it on ourselves. We wanted to prove that we could do it so we kept pushing. It was a goal that was achieved. Goals give you something to push for and something to build up to. The feeling of accomplishment is addicting. That is while our distances and events have continued to grow in distance.
Being from Florida, we are not very prepared for the “rolling hills.” They are significant but possible to push up, slowly. It was hot again; most likely the hottest of the week.
After a long day of peddling we saw some significant thunder storms in the evening. Down-pouring rain, thunder, and lightning. Wow.
Internet connectivity has been spotty at best. We have been pushing some short posts and photos out to Facebook.

Well, I hoped I would be able to get internet/cell signals at the overnight towns. That hasn’t been the case, so I am catching up on my blog posts in Des Moines, IA. I have been doing some short posts, when I get signals through some of the small towns. I hope it has been enough to at least peak your interest. Google RAGBRAI. There is a history; there is a legacy; there is a story. It is NOT just a party. It is a place to make new friends and see parts of the state you wouldn’t otherwise see.
First day was Council Bluffs to Harlan.

We rode close to 60 miles. It was hard. It was hot. But it was fun. The amount of people participating is staggering. The towns we passed through have been awesome. The other vehicles on the road have been considerate, patient, and accommodating.

Beekman’s Ice cream.
Chilling in the most comfortable weather since we made it to Iowa.
