10 Things You Might Not Know About Halloween

Happy Halloween

School Training Solutions would like to wish everyone a fun and safe Halloween. Remember to drive carefully, as children are more than twice as likely to be killed in a pedestrian/car accident on Halloween than on any other night.

In recognition of this holiday, we have provided these 10 interesting facts about Halloween.

 1. Jack O’Lanterns were first made from turnips. Boo!
 2. In 1905, sticky molasses taffy and hot green pickles were the recommended Halloween treats.
 3. Americans spend approximately $6 billion on Halloween each year, making it the second highest grossing commercial holiday (after Christmas).
 4. Versions of trick-or-treating date back to medieval times; however, the holiday died out in America during WWII when sugar was rationed.
 5. After WWII, Peanuts comic strip, children’s magazine Jack and Jill, and the radio program The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, helped to make trick-or-treating popular again.
 6. Snickers is the most popular Halloween candy.
 7. On Halloween in Hollywood, you can be fined $1,000 if you use or sell Silly String.
 8. Candy Corn originally had no association with Halloween or fall and was called “chicken feed.”
 9. A few towns with Halloween-themed names include: Frankenstein, MO; Scary, WV; Spook City, CO; Candy Town, OH; Mummy Pass, CO; Pumpkin Center, CA; and Ghost Cove, FL.
 10. In the movie, Halloween, a William Shatner Star Trek mask was used for the main character, Michael Myers, because the movie had a very limited budget, and it was the cheapest mask they could find.
